Nikolaos I. Rousis
Nikolaos received a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry after studying at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (UoA), Greece and a Master’s Degree in “Chemical Analysis – Quality Control” (Analytical Chemistry) after graduating from the UoA. Furthermore, he attained a Certificate of Enology from the inter-university programme of the UoA and the Agricultural University of Athens. Since March 2013, he is a PhD student at the IRCCS – Mario Negri Institute for Pharmacological Research of Milan, Italy.
In the period 2010 – 2013 he worked as a research associate in the Laboratory of Analytical Chemistry, Department of Chemistry, UoA, and from 2011 to 2012 he also worked as a research associate to the Center of Biological Research of Armed Forces, Ministry of National Defense, Greece. He was a teaching assistant for two academic years (2010-2012) in the Chemistry and the Pharmacy Departments of UoA.
His research interests were focused on method development of modern analytical protocols for trace element analysis in environmental, pharmaceutical and food samples, using atomic (mass) spectrometric analytical techniques. Since March 2013, he has been working in the field of “sewage epidemiology”. At present, his research is focused on the development of a novel application of the sewage epidemiology approach, using the chemical analysis of pesticides excretion products in urban wastewater in order to evaluate the human exposure to these toxic compounds.
Identification and screening of sewage biomarkers of human exposure to environmental and food toxicants
The main purpose of this project is to develop novel applications of the sewage epidemiology approach. Determination of human metabolic residues (biomarkers) in sewage will be performed, in order to evaluate the collective exposure of a community to environmental chemicals and food toxicants.
